About Envelope
Envelope is a film and photography studio based in Lalitpur, Nepal, working across the Himalayas and beyond. We started in 2019 as a group of friends sharing a co-working space in Kathmandu: filmmakers, musicians, animators and photographers, each busy in our own corners.
We are a small team of misfits, and we like it that way. Everyone here shoots, edits, argues about stories and owns their work. Luckily, our work demands us to be endlessly curious about almost everything in the world. These days we are most inspired by human connections. If this sounds like your kind of place, read on.
The Role
As a Cinematographer at Envelope, you will use your camera to tell stories. One month that might mean a documentary in a remote village, the next a travel film across the Himalayas, an architectural piece, a brand story or a family celebration. Much of our work is unscripted, so you will need to see a story as it unfolds and shape it with every frame. You will work closely with our photographers, producers and editors from the first idea to the final film.
What you will be doing
• Filming documentaries, travel and architectural films, brand projects and personal stories, across Nepal and abroad. • Developing the visual approach for each project with the team: look, movement, light and coverage. • Working in unscripted, fast-moving situations: anticipating moments, finding light and staying unobtrusive. • Operating cinema and mirrorless camera systems, gimbals, lighting and audio kits with confidence. • Organizing, backing up and handing over footage carefully at the end of each shoot. • Contributing to the edit, from selecting moments to shaping the story, alongside our editors. • Pitching ideas for personal and studio projects, and helping look after the studio's kit.
What you will bring
• At least 2 years of professional filming experience in documentary, travel, commercial, narrative or similar work. • A showreel that shows how you tell a story, not just how you frame a shot. • Strong working knowledge of camera systems such as Sony / Blackmagic / RED, lenses, lighting and audio. • Basic editing skills in DaVinci Resolve or Premiere Pro, with an understanding of colour. • Curiosity about people, places and ideas, and a point of view of your own. • The stamina for long days, rough terrain and changing conditions. • An easy way with people, whether you are filming a stranger, a client or a family. • Comfort with travel and flexible hours. Nepali and English; skills for aerial cinematography is a plus.
Join the team
If you think this role is right for you, we would love to hear from you. Send your application, CV and showreel to hello@weareenvelope.com with "Cinematographer" in the subject line.
We read every application closely, so please make yours your own. Tell us what motivates you, how you like to work with people and creatives, and why you believe Envelope is the right place for you. A thoughtful, professional application that shows your personality will always be more welcome than just a list of projects you have done.
